PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is condition that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event or series of traumatic events over time. PTSD can develop after a distressing event or process that involves emotional or physically threatened pain, shame, injury, or damage to your psyche.

Through proper therapy, such as EMDR, Brainspotting, and Somatic Therapy you can heal from past trauma and PTSD. Additionally, your self-care, relationships, exercise, and diet can help you move forward.

You can heal. While it may have happened many years ago or even last month, your trauma can be treated and you can find peace and healing.

The symptoms of PTSD typically fall into four main categories:

  1. Intrusive memories: These are recurring and distressing memories of the traumatic event, often in the form of nightmares or flashbacks. Individuals with PTSD may also experience intense emotional or physical reactions when reminded of the event.
  2. Avoidance: People with PTSD may avoid places, activities, or even thoughts that remind them of the traumatic event. They may also try to avoid talking about the event or avoid people who may trigger their memories.
  3. Negative changes in thinking and mood: PTSD can lead to negative thoughts about oneself or the world, feelings of detachment or estrangement from others, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, and a sense of hopelessness about the future.
  4. Hyperarousal and reactivity: This involves being constantly on guard, feeling jumpy or easily startled, having difficulty concentrating or sleeping, and experiencing irritability or outbursts of anger.

It's important to note that not everyone who experiences a traumatic event will develop PTSD. The disorder can vary in severity and duration, with symptoms appearing within three months of the traumatic event or sometimes even years later.

Treatment for PTSD often involves a combination of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and sometimes medication. Should you need medication we can help guide you to a competent provider.

These interventions aim to help individuals process their traumatic experiences, manage symptoms, and regain control over their lives. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of PTSD, it is recommended to seek professional help from a mental health provider.
