Dealing with anxiety can be terrible. Let's face it, if you are anxious or worried or having panic attacks life can be really miserable. Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences from time to time. However, for some people, anxiety can become overwhelming and persistent, it can really complicate your daily joy and relationships. Anxiety is more than occasional worry, it's characterized by excessive and persistent worry, fear, and unease.
Depression is a different matter altogether but can be just as debilitating. It is characterized by a list of persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, low energy levels, difficulty concentrating, and a host of physical and emotional symptoms. Depression is a complex condition that can significantly impact your overall quality of life.
Treatment for anxiety and depression typically involves a combination of therapy and medication, in addition to often making major life changes in some ways. We will assist you in receiving the direction and answers that you need to begin finding solutions to anxiety and depression. Our therapists are trained in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is an evidence-based therapy that helps you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors contributing to depression. The process focuses on developing coping strategies, problem-solving skills, and promoting positive changes in behavior and thinking.
If you want to change the way you feel you have to start changing the way you think. The difficulty is, the way that you think is often fueled by beliefs that you have from your childhood and from your relationships. These beliefs can be formed early on and are often undetected or unacknowledged. We help you reevaluate those beliefs about yourself and others to bring about rational, healthy thoughts that influence the way that you feel.
For some people a combination of medication and therapy is the best course to obtain the results you are seeking. We don't push or mandate medication, rather we discuss your options and our recommendations and allow you to chart your course with what you feel for your body, your mind. We've seen medication be a strong support and at times needful to assist clients in tackling their present issues. We work with doctors, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners to ensure you have a support system that helps you heal. Having an integrative approach to wellness can be achieved by therapy and counseling, and in some cases using medication to assist in the process.
I've been asked how people come to feel better, how they will work through anxiety and depression in therapy and if is worth the cost - if it's really that valuable.
My answer is simple, you don't know better and that's why you don't feel better. You are operating on old default networks and patterns of thinking that have become the norm and you likely don't know it. You just know you feel terrible and are unhappy. Honestly, we could could frame the question in a way that promotes a different consideration … the question perhaps is really more about how much you value your happiness, how much you want a life of joy and fulfillment.
